Back to normal
Ahh, back to Saturday knitting. It’s great. The cafe we meet in has great coffee from Ariosa, a small Irish company, wonderful sandwiches, and fantastic cakes from The Cake Cafe. I had a piece of delicious moist gingerbread. I adore ginger. I’ve been looking for a good parkin recipe for ages, if anyone knows of one please let me know. Bonus points if it’s vegan so I don’t need to buy eggs.
We were a small group this week, but were joined by four lovely new people, which is great. Afterwards we all went our separate ways but all ended up in the new This is Knit in the Powerscourt Townhouse. I think this could become a habit. I failed miserably in my working through my stash plan. I managed so well at the launch party on Friday night, but a project idea’s been niggling at me, and the perfect yarn presented itself, so I couldn’t resist and have cast on.
The hats I was working on yesterday are for Innocent Smoothie bottles. For their Big Knit campaign, for every little hat knit €1 will go to Age Action Ireland. I have 8 made so far, but I’m taking a tiny break for a couple of days. The hats are really quick to knit up though, and the perfect opportunity for a little sampler of stranded knitting, which I’ve been meaning to try for a while. The sweater I want to cast on for next is a lot more complicated than a tiny hat, but it’s a start, and I have another intermediate project in mind for some extra practice before I get to the complicated yoke of the sweater. (Plus, you know, I also need to swatch and start the project, I’m getting a little bit ahead of myself).

(The innocent smoothie bottle above can be seen modeling this season’s latest style: Fair Isle in the Galway colours)

The little hats are cute, but I don’t quite get why the bottles …need them. Wouldn’t it make more sense for them to be given to knit up in newborn sizes and given to babies or something? What do people DO with the hats they buy on the bottles?
Okay, that was just the brain thing I couldn’t shut off. It’s off now.
It’s funny how the minute it gets cold I’m filled with longing to buy new yarn. Mind you, it would have made more sense to have been knitting all summer, but instead I pouted that it was raining. Duh.

so ginger parkin…. i love gingerbread. i have never made ginger cake. so the search is on.
your hats are very cute. love the colors. admire the fact you did a little two color work there on such a weensy hat.
and if you find the perfect yarn for a project, you are practically obligated to buy it so the yarn doesn’t go to waste! have fun casting on! take care.

TadMack - I kind of agree with you on the little hats thing. However, I think it raises the profile of the charity which can only be a good thing. Plus the hats are quite cute, and my mum has one still from last year’s campaign that she bought because she thought it was lovely, so at least one person holds on to them

Lovely hats! I miss the saturday knitting a lot… but I’m sure I’d use all my money in This is knit as well, so I guess I’m better off here… *sigh*

Martha Stweart dot com has the best gingerbread recipe EVER…search recipes under “Gingerbread Snacking Cake”. the recipe does call for eggs, but you can use your regular egg substitue with only a slight loss of fluffiness. I also use hot Jamaican Ginger Beer instead of boiling water for extra pepperiness.

Interestingly enough, I just ran across this — Pringles is now doing the same thing as Innocent, but no knitting, sadly. Still: very good for charities.
