The Chrysalids by John Wyndham

I enjoy John Wyndam’s tales – especially The Midwich Cuckoos and The Kraken Wakes – there’s a science fiction element to them, but a lot of the content is about human behaviour, and that I enjoy.

This is a tale of a group of children in an extremely conservative environment where anything that marks someone as different is seen as the devil’s work. It’s dark in its own way, and I found it interesting and engaging. Once I reached the half way point I couldn’t put it down, which is always a good sign. I love how it’s all plausible. Once you accept the tiny stretch of the imagination needed to believe in the traits that mark people as different everything else makes sense.
